There are several factors to consider when it comes to choosing the proper crane size and capacity for a job. Do you need a crawler crane? An all-terrain crane? Or maybe a rough-terrain crane? Before selecting which type of crane to use, you’ll need to determine the size and weight of the load, obstructions, location, reach, as well as several other factors.
The following thirteen steps are critical when it comes to safely choosing the proper crane size for your job.
Make note of any clearance issues that might occur, whether it be overhead obstructions or height under ceiling.
Account for the distance between the hook and the jib head.
Determine if specialized rigging equipment will be necessary to prevent removal of critical plant equipment during the lift.
Compute the maximum radius from the center of pin.
Determine how the crane will enter and exit the worksite, and whether or not the entrance sites and roads involved are able to accommodate.
Validate whether or not the crane will have to work around obstructions during the setup process.
Guarantee that the ground will be able to support the crane. This may require further testing.
Account for the height of obstructions between the load and the crane.
Account for the required boom length.
Check to see if obstructions will get in the way of the counterweight as it swings.
Validate the load’s total weight. If you’re unsure of this, it may be in your best interest to ask an engineering professional.
Determine the hook height that the lifting equipment requires.
